A Thousand Mornings

A Thousand Mornings
30” x 40”
Oil pastel, acrylic, and colored pencil on panel
“There is a place in northern Washington,
on the outskirts of a protected harbor,
that I return to.
I had never been there before
when my sister and I went searching for it.
But when we found it,
we heard our own hearts
beating in the overstory.
So much of consequence has unfolded there
already in the couple of years since,
in the thin light hazed by all the dewdrops.
Life, the raw kind,
that of our childrens’
has taken root
and sprouted from there.
Our own bodies budding off from themselves
A garden, most exquisite.
All that the high desert mountains of Colorado
leaves parched in my throat
dampens - a relief - when I cross the threshold
of the walls
that glow in peach hues as the sun sets
over the water beyond,
setting Rainier alight.
And when I wake,
I find myself wishing only for
a thousand mornings more.”
