"Strawberry" depicts Strawberry hot springs outside of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I painted it from a few series of photographs I took while visiting the springs in late 2021 for my mother’s birthday. I have such a deep love for hot springs as they are vivid examples of a luxury produced by mother nature and widely enjoyed by humans. I love how they foster extended stays in the outdoors, with spring loungers soaking up the beauty of the surroundings and the miraculous incidence of gurgling warmth despite otherwise chilly temps outside (if you hit them during the right season!). I find Strawberry hot springs to be a particularly appealing springs given the beauty of the aspen and evergreen-laden hills that surround them, sending reflections of the dense growth and ephemeral Rocky Mountain skies across the waters. The structural elements that frame the landscape serve as both a nod to a few of the ultra-modern homes that can be peeped during the journey out to Strawberry from Steamboat, and also a reflection of the structures we tend to build up around hot springs to make them more amenable for human use.
