Mellow Moon

30” x 40”

Oil, oil pastel, Sumi ink, gouache and acrylic on panel

I painted this piece on commission for the Mellow Moon - a hip, vintage motel in Del Norte, CO that was recently revamped by Lauren Richardson of @thesursy to evoke “roadside Americana” vibes that jive with the rustic charm of the small southern Colorado valley town. The area reminds me a lot of New Mexico. She wanted a painting that would hang in the lounge/cocktail bar portion of the property that considered the local landscape and architecture. I relied heavily on the lines of the building itself, some reference photos I took while on a quick scouting trip in January of the valley, the portion of the Rio Grande river that runs through the town, the nearby Sangre De Christo mountains at sunset, and some imagery of the area of local vegetation and scenery during other seasons to come up with a composition and palette that attempted to convey a sense of the area as a whole.
