Gossamer : a fine, filmy substance consisting of cobwebs spun by small spiders, seen especially in autumn.

Gossamer depicts an autumnal landscape in the Ruby Mountain range near Crested Butte, CO interlaced with manmade structures. The structures draw from the natural world around it, with the shapes and colors of the terrain’s features mirrored in the constructed ones. The original painting was commissioned by Smartwool in 2020 to be used in an apparel line in fall 2021. We The team at Smartwool and I put our heads together to come up with the concept. We settled on featuring oft-visited Colorado wilderness areas (the other commissioned painting for this project was Outpost which depicts Torrey’s Peak). This piece was intended to examine how the structures we build utilize the natural resources available to us, reminding us that we must be intentional about honoring the life forms and other naturally occurring entities that were sacrificed for our developments.
