Gorges Du Verdon

22” x 30”

25” x 33.25” framed (hardwood maple with UV-protective museum glass)

Ink & acrylic on unstretched St. Mary's cotton

I well remember the first day that I set out to explore the area around our rented home in Regussé, France. We knew we had landed near a national park but hadn’t researched the park enough to have a sense of its aesthetics. The Gorges du Verdon were a welcome surprise to my unsuspecting eyes. Late summer left much of the surrounding countryside feeling parched and withered yet the waters that rip through the Earth here are evergreen. You can see where the waterways extend beyond the Gorges into the downstream lands before you see the waters themselves by the eruption of mulberry, wild juniper, and downy oaks that line the waters’ edge.
