I couldn’t find the name of the photographer that took the photo I referenced for this piece but I found the photo in an archive of vintage lesbian imagery. I’ve always been drawn to captured instances of homosexuality in eras prior to our modern one of relative acceptance given how courageous the subjects necessarily were to follow their hearts in the face of homophobia and bigotry. The two women in this image appear to have been photographed in privacy, enjoying the intimacy of each other and their pet cat that complements the soft curves of the intertwined bodies and the setting. Having spent time romantically involved with women in my own past, the image does bring me back to days steeped in a deeply feminine world devoid of masculine influences.
