The Ceze River descends over limestone rocks in a series of stunning drops and pools at the Cascades du Sautadet. We took a day trip here and spent more time lounging on the rocks than swimming given the roiling nature of the waters through these gorges that contain hidden whirlpools and strong eddies. I remember realizing how much more careful I was being than usual given that I was hosting my offspring at the time. Having grown up on river canyons this wasn’t an altogether unfamiliar landscape but my caution was - had I become a permanent risk purveyor? The notion irked me. Now that my daughter is two I can say that yes, parenthood has taught me to search out physical risks much more readily than before, but now I know that it’s only because I love her so.
