Bones of High Nice

22” x 30”

25” x 33.25” framed (hardwood maple with UV-protective museum glass)

Ink & acrylic on unstretched St. Mary's cotton

I wasn’t particularly enchanted by Nice until we found the cemetery atop the city’s peak, and the old part of town that lies on the other side. I typically think of cemeteries as low-lying entities, all the better to enable their residents’ reassimilation into the earth. But the bones of Nice are indeed perched high above the city. Perhaps that’s why the pair of angels that served as some long gone soul’s gravestone stood out to me enough to have painted them multiple times since- doesn’t being closer to the sky increase your chances of becoming an angel post-mortem?
